Grade 10 Reflection
This year I have the honor to be on the student council as the president and that does give me lots and lots of challenges. It’s the first year of our student council, which means we need to work out everything.
During the semester, we work on small things like, fixing school’s Internet, improving the lunch quality, and holding meetings. And furthermore, we work on bigger things like fundraising for earthquake, establishing No-uniform Day and English Day, and our biggest project this year, which is the school dance, also the biggest challenge I’ve ever had!
When we were planning for it, we suddenly realized that, “Oh it’s a huge event, we need so many things!! We need to have money, a place, food, posters and everything!!” At that time, I realized the seriousness of this challenge. I started making specific plans for my cabinets, like “by the end of this week we need to talk to Mr. Eaton about the venue” “by the end of next week we need to talk to Ms. Maxine” etc. And then I divided up the jobs; I let each person to take one part and then give them due dates. I took the part of communicating with people and dealing with all sorts of problems, which is basically in charge of everyone. It’s the first time I learned to be this organized.
When we were writing the plan and the long-term vision for the school dance, we argued a lot. We all have our own opinion, so I have to make choices among those opinions. That wasn’t easy. In the plan we wrote the purpose, process, budget and expectation of the school dance, it was like writing something for a company. I complained about how hard it was, and then I thought, well, I still would be dealing with it in the future, so why not get used to it now. The more experience I have now, the better for my future, right?
As I mentioned before, I took the part of communicating with people and dealing with problems. That was also a huge challenge. When we were asking the school for a venue, I have to talk to the headmasters and be persuasive. And when we need the posters, I have to find someone who has the resources, and then I need to figure out the price. That really improves my communicating skill.
Although this challenge is still here since our school dance hasn’t happened yet. But I have the confidence that it’ll be fantastic.
Being on the student council has a big influence on my life. It changes who I am and makes me become a better person. From this challenge, I learned to be organized and communicative. And I finally realize, life ain’t easy. No matter it’s in school or in the society, you have to work hard for what you want; and the process ain’t easy, along the way to the success, you would see lots and lots of difficulties, but the result, I am sure it would be worthy.
