MUN Resolution
Introduction:
I finished the resolution on June 13th, 2013. It's our bloc for the Model United Nations Conference. I'm the delegate of United States and I'm also the main submitter of this resolution.
Reflection:
The hardest part of it was that I need to make everything in detail. Sometimes, it's very hard to find some information. And also, it's hard to have solutions because you have to consider about both potical and economic, you have to think abou the influence and consequences first. I think I did well on few clauses, I like the "tax reduction" one best. If I can do it again, I will be more precise about the word I use. In the assignment, I learned how to write a resolution on a specific topic.
FORUM: United Nations General Assembly
QUESTION OF: The Obesity Epidemic
SUMBITTED BY: United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Kazakhstan, and Lebanon.
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,
Aware of the fact that, globally, there are more than 1.4 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them clinically obese, and over 40 million children who are under five years old are overweight,
Congratulating the World Health Organization has developed the 2008-2013 Action plan which aims to build on the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health,
Realizing obesity increases the chance of having heart problems, diabetes, and some forms of cancer, and also it’s one of the leading causes of global deaths, but according to the WHO, it still can be prevented,
Recognizing obesity is expected to get worse over the future, and by 2015, 700 million people will be considered obese,
Deeply disturbed by the fact that obesity and overweight is caused by intake of too much calories and unhealthy lifestyle,
Keeping in mind the main difficulties of reducing obesity are economic and political,
1. Urges all the countries working together to reduce the rate of obesity by setting a common goal, which is reducing the rate of obesity, and then accomplish the goal step by step;
2. Encourage every primary school to provide health courses to students;
3. Establish a law that doesn’t allow to have any fast food restaurants within the 200 meters radius of a school;
4. Reminds the fact that some countries don’t print calorie levels on food packages or on menus so the United Nations should establish a law that enforce all countries to put the calorie levels on food packages with clear signs using larger font sizes on the packages, so it can be more easier for customers when they decide how many calories they want to take from their food and also put the calorie levels on menus, so that it can help customers to make healthier food choice;
5. Recommend for all the nations’ governments to encourage the food industry to promote healthy diet, to reduce the fat, sugar and salt content of processed foods to a healthy level, which means fat content should be 1.5g or less per 100g; sugar content should be 5g or less per 100g; salt content should be 0.3g or less per 100g, and meanwhile, to ensure the availability of healthy food choices so that it will be affordable and easily accessible to all, especially the poorest individuals, by giving tax reduction to those food industry;
6. Strongly support everyone to engage in regular physical activity 60 minutes or more every day: according to World Health Organization, in order to improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, bone health, and cardiovascular, for children aged 5–17 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily and amounts of physical activity greater than 60 minutes provide additional health benefits;
7. Proposes the World Health Organization to set up a group called Obesity Control Group for obesity problem and encourage every nation gives budgets to that group in order to do the researches and studies on obesity epidemic annually.
