Writing from Speech
Introduction:
I wrote this speech on Mar 14th, 2013. This is the speech final draft I used for the Speech Unit Final Exam.
Reflection:
The hardest part of the assignment was that we need to “be” the president of China and addressed two issues in the society. And we actually had to figure out solutions for that. I think I did pretty well on the structure and I used many result from my research on the topic. Next time, I will do more research. From this assignment, I learned how to be both rhetoric and persuasive.

My dear people of China,
Today, I’d like to start my speech by saying how grateful I am to have your support and have the opportunity to lead this country. In the past ten years, the economic development has helped China to become one of the top ten countries. However, problems still exist. Recently, the quality of education and food is decreasing. Media exposes many serious issues that people really need to concern about. So today my topic would be about education and food. They both are very important in our daily life. But research has shown that Chinese education really concern people because students are really stressful now. And the food safety issue is getting a lot more serious. Government has found lots of dangerous food appeared on the market. Lots of evidence has shown that the problems need to be addressed as soon as possible.
First, it’s about the education.
More and more parents and students are complaining about how stressful the Chinese education is. Liang Wei, a professor from Beijing University said, “A few days ago, I visited a high school. Students are still studying at 10:30 pm in the classrooms. And at the second day, students are reading books at 6:30 am. Subtract the time they use to take shower and have breakfast. Their sleep time is only about 6 hours.” He also told me something that would make people feel very sad about the Chinese education. He said he once saw a sign in a school: Why spend so much time on sleeping when you are alive; after you die, you will get long sleep. I don’t think students will be positive after seeing this in the school.
Also the Chinese primary school and middle school students really have lots of pressure. They have too much homework to do so that most of them are lack of sleep. Research shows in the past ten years, students’ sleep time is decreasing continually. At weekdays, almost 80% students are lack of sleep. And at weekends, there are still almost 70% students are lack of sleep.
I think we really need to take actions. I suggest the education department and the school should work together figure out what’s the best amount of the homework. And we should make a specific plan to reduce the students’ stress and help the schools and students to find the balance between the homework and the activities.
Second, it’s about the food.
Food safety issues are getting a lot more serious these days. Media keeps exposing the evidence that show how dangerous Chinese food is. As the leader of China and also a citizen like all of you, personally, I concern about this as well. Recently the Chinese ministry of health has announced that, during 2012, China received food poisoning incidents about 174 cases. There are 6685 people has been poisoned and 146 died. Compared to the data from 2011, the number of people being poisoned reduces by 19.7% but the number of death increased by 6.6%. I think people would definitely be concerned.
And an article form China Daily Newspaper has mentioned that, every year, China produces 7 to 14 million tons of wasted oil. And 3.5 million tons of them go back into our food. The wasted oil can really harm people. If you keep using that, it even can cause cancer. I suggest, we can turn the wasted oil into a resource and use it for other purposes. I recommend caution in dealing with this matter.
I know that China has already became a very powerful country, but the only way can lead China to become the strongest in the world, is to solve the issues we have now. Therefore, I encourage and suggest the relevant departments can take actions, and I also encourage my people to cooperate with the government in order to build a better society. Thank you!
