K12 Journalism Class
Introduction:
This assignment was on Jan 10, 2013. The purpose of the assignment was to write a local news using a beat. For example: Government, school, economy...
Reflection:
The hardest part of the assignment was that we have to use what we learn so far in Journalism to write a news; and it also requires 600-650 words length. I think I did well in this assignment because my beat is very interesting and can draw people's attention to it easily.
If I had to do it again, I think I would write more about what happen after the charity event. For example: Do the poor children receive our help? Are they happy with their lives now?
From this assignment, I learnt that writing a piece of news isn't a easy job, it requires time and skill. I learnt how to introduce the event to my audience and how to let them understand the main idea of my story easily.

Charity Auction: Giving Made Easy
-By Kathy Chen
Dec.29th, 2012, was a big day for the Shanghai United International School. The annual charity event happened on that day. The charity organization of the school held their annual event to donate money for the poor children in Yunnan.
Unlike any events before, this time, every class had a stand. And the school gathered all the stalls in the gym in order to attract more attention at one time, and also created a big scene. Students brought items they wanted to sell or donate to the organization like clothes, snacks, and then sold all the items on their own to other students, teachers and even parents. Students had to come up with ideas to sell items and figure out ways to attract more people and bring more costumes to their stalls. SUIS’s students are all very creative. They sold items to people by convincing them how good the products are. There’s more. Some of them were even more creative. They used the speakers to tell people what they were selling, or they played the video they made at the stall in order to catch people’s eye.

The school set up a big area as the salesroom, the auction even happened in the gym and classrooms in the middle school. The school invited parents to come and attend the auction. At that day, many parents came. There were a lot of goods being sold at the auction. Famous drawing and writing were parents’ favorite items to buy. However, the auction was very different from the other auctions. Many special and unique items were being sold at the auction. For example, the most interesting one was going to karaoke with one of the school co-principals, a music teacher and an English teacher. And another interesting one was going to dinner with another principal and also her daughter. They would buy you dinner and would talk to you about how to learn or study abroad. And in the meanwhile, a motorbike was being sold at the auction for 5000 RMB, and that’s 800 USD. It was a very unique bike. People could only buy them in United States. A student’s father donated that to school. A lot of people showed their generousness to the society during the charity auction, especially those students’ parents.
This time, a lot of news media were getting involved. Several local news media went to the auction, including reporters from Shanghai Daily, Shanghai Media Group and other media companies. They interviewed the principal of the school, and the leader of the XieLiHui Charity Organization, which is also the person who is a professional journalist himself in the SMG. XieLiHui and the SUIS have worked together multiple times in order to do something for the charity and also for the society.
From the interview with a parent of a Grade 6 student, she said with pleasure, “ although it’s the first time for me to join the auction, I can feel that all the parents, students and also the teachers are very generous. They all show their kindness during this charity event. The school provides a very good environment that makes people to help others. Glad I sent my child to this school.”
During the auction, the school raised a whopping 60,000 RMB, which is equivalent to 10,000 USD for the children in Yunnan. With the money, people can do a lot for the society. Thousands of children in Yunnan schools are enjoying school lunches with improved freshness quality. They used to have rice with little stones in it, but now they even have eggs to eat at lunch.
The need for charitable events was very strong and important to people who wanted to help, as the leader of the charity organization said, “We have been doing this for years. Charity can be big or small, however, the most important thing is that giving made easy. Try your best to help others, and you will receive the same thing.”
