In 1931, James Truslow Adams defined the term “American Dream” as the “dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” His definition has been spread to the world ever since.
It’s true that America is a “promised land” of beauty, where Americans have ever-expanding opportunity and they expect life to get better. In my collage, I have a picture of New York City, which represents the beauty of a country; New York is also a proof of the development of a city towards better life quality. Also, I have a picture of Hollywood, which I think it represents opportunity because in my opinion, Hollywood is a place that makes all impossible ideas become possible, and it’s also a place where talented people can display their abilities, which provides people with tons of opportunities and gives people a way to express themselves.
The second idea is that, in America, people believe that anything can be achieved, if someone works hard enough. Like my picture of a statue, no matter what conditions are given, a person should work hard and build himself from the inside. And also, in my collage, I have pictures of famous people like Barack Obama, Michael Jackson, Steven Jobs and Lady Gaga. The reason I chose them was because I think they are individuals who work hard enough at the first place in order to get where they are today. Although some people may have passed away, but their spirit and their great work before deaths have became a great legacy for the people. Also, nothing is impossible: Barack Obama works really hard to get where he is today, which is the president of United States, and also the first African-American president throughout the Americas history.
Finally, America is a country that provides the freedom to express oneself and explore ones potential like no other country. I have a picture of the statue of liberty, which obviously represents the idea of freedom. With that freedom, people in America have the rights to pursuit things they want and to express themselves.
American dream presents the idea of having a better life in many different aspects. So I think what the American dream really means to me can be concluded into three words: Opportunity, Hardworking, and Freedom.
