The self-made man statue shows a strong, muscular man holding a hammer very high in his right hand and a chisel in his left hand. The statue looks like the man is trying to build himself. And he’s “standing” on a rock, or should I say, he’s coming out of a rock.
There are a few parts in the statue. Obviously, the first part is the man. The man, who has a strong and fit figure and stands still, represents people, especially those people who are working very hard by themselves. The second part I notice is the hammer, which is in the hand of the man. From my perspective I think it represents the hard work and the effort and it shows that people are trying to work hard and all. And the third part that I notice is the stone. The stone is part of the statue, however, the carving hasn’t done yet, and I think it represents the circumstances and the conditions of life and society and all. And I see the process of carving the statue as the process of struggling and also the process of building a person.
In the previous journal, I wrote about American Dream. And I think part of it is that if you work hard enough, anything can be achieved, which can also be explained by the term “self-reliant”. In the picture, the man was just a rock. He came from nothing. However, after his hard work, he made himself out of the rock and finally become someone. So the self-made man shows the idea of using a person’s strength to build oneself from the inside, no matter what circumstances are given. And if the person really works hard enough, at the end, that person would become successful and powerful and become the person he or she desires to be.
