Almost finish reading the book. So far, I think Holden has felt two emotions: desperate and lonely. Of course, these are just how I feel about this character.
In the book, Holden always says words like “goddam” “phony” and so on. He uses them on people he met, and friends as well. I can feel his desperate and his anger through these words. Well, maybe that’s how he really feels inside of him. However, I think it’s his way to show his desperation about his life and the world. He hates everything, almost. To him, most of the things in this world are fake and phony. He just hates them.
I think not only me, but everyone can see his loneliness. Drinking at bars, meeting different friends every day, and giving buzz to old friends that he hardly like… He only has done these, because he was too lonely. When he’s in a bad shape, no one has been there for him, not even his family. He misses his sister, old Phoebe, but he just can’t visit her. He doesn’t want to go home. He can only find different companies so that he can at least pretend that he isn’t lonely in this phony world.
